What does an in home family photoshoot look like?
Growing up, the only family photoshoots I remember my family doing were the classic in-studio Olan Mills matching outfits, stale background setup. I feel like this is a core memory for those of us born between 1980-1999. Nothing against those…they are timeless, but can lack authenticity + emotional depth. One of my goals as a photographer is for some of an individual’s personality to show in a still image. Thus leads me to in-home family photoshoots, which have become a bit of a trend over the last several years.
After shooting and editing a couple of in-home sessions, they’ve quickly become my favorites to shoot and edit. In-home sessions tell such a great story and allow for the freezing of every day memories in your home to take place. From the family perspective, it’s great to be in the comfort of your own home and not have to get all the little ones ready to leave the house and drive to an unknown location. Kids are also more comfortable when you as the photographer are in “their territory” and keep the session relaxed. Which if the kids are more comfortable, then mom and dad are too and the whole experience goes more smoothly.
My approach to an in-home photoshoot is to keep things organized but less structured. In other words, I like to do minimal poses and more “prompting” in more of a casual flow. I ask mom and dad if there is anything special they like to do with their kids, such as play music, read books, arts & crafts, etc. This way all parties involved feel like they’re doing the same things they already enjoy everyday. This particular family loved to read books and have dance parties in the living room, so I was able to get great action shots of them doing their favorite activities together.
After having shot a couple of in-home family photoshoots I thought I’d share a few reasons why a session in your home might be right for you:
5 Reasons To book family portraits in your home:
Comfortable Environment: Easily reason #1. In-home photoshoots allow for a relaxed atmosphere, leading to more natural and intimate moments captured in familiar surroundings.
Personalized Touch: Photos taken at home showcase your family's unique personality and style, reflecting each member of your family’s individuality.
Convenience: No need to travel to a studio or outdoor location, making it easier for families with young children and / or busy schedules.
Emotional Connection: With a photoshoot in your own space, the emotional depth and intimacy of the moments captured are heightened, resulting in images of genuine moments. Such as reading your kids’ favorite book as a family, dancing together, cuddling on the couch, etc.
Weather-Proof: No need to worry about rain, wind, or extreme temperatures when shooting indoors, ensuring a comfortable and stress-free experience for everyone involved.
